Daniel Kamei TAMENGLONG: To unite the Nagas through a common script, Naga scripts Learning and Training Centre was opened here at Tamenglong with Sumant Singh IAS, Deputy Commissioner Tamenglong as chief guest and N. Jacob, Zonal Education Officer Tamenglong as guest of honour today at the Auditorium of United Builders School Tamenglong.
While speaking as chief guest, Sumant Singh IAS said that it is both tyrannical and tragic that human society has registered such remarkable achievement in the field of science and technological, landed on moon, develop medicines and computer, made the world a global village but still remains disunited. We need to support what the elders are trying to do. Every tribe has it own dialect to communicate to one another, Naga too need to have a common language to communicate one another like Hindi and English language etc, he said. Further he also said that while trying to revive customs, identity or the lost heritage one should be cautious so that the price is not communal conflict and tension, Sumant Singh said.
Delivering his key note address Rev. Kaiba Riamei, Chiarman of Development Committee on Naga Script said that the founder one Late Laokeinang Phaomei son of late Kaluatbung of Nungnang (Luangreng) village of Nungba sub-division of Tamenglong was one of the pioneer Christian leader in the Zeliangrong region who was chaste out from his village for his conversion to Christianity.
He was the only educated person and he was appointed as teacher but was forced to resigned by his village for his conversion to Christianity. During the Naga national movement late Laokeinang Phaomei was made interpreter in communicating with some leader from Nagaland. In course of time the Indian army arrested him and put in Imphal jail on allegation that he was informer (CID).
While he was in jail it occured to him that if Naga is a Nation, it must have “Naga Script”. In the midst of his preoccupation he claims God revealed him a wonderful script for Naga. The idea which he had was fixed in his heart with that vision. A script would start like an egg hatching out one by one and thus these scripts came in existence today, Rev. Kaiba said.
Meanwhile, the elder son of the Naga script founder identified as Ph Khiaklung said that one Konyak from Nagaland identified as Jahoi Walim had a vision where God revealed that Naga scripts are at Tamenglong and directed him to learn the script.
Both Jahoi Walim Konyak and Chungmao Walim Konyak had come to him in the year 1997 to learn the script, Ph Khiaklung said. He further said that now Nagaland state has many learning centres. He also demonstrated how to read the script today at the learning and training centre. He also narrate what his late father tried to develop the common script for Nagas.
