Five AR soldiers killed in UNLF ambush, one cdo injured in another attack PDF Print E-mail

IMPHAL, Nov 23: Five personnel of the Assam Riflles including one major and a captain were killed while one personnel of the Imphal east district police commando sustained bullet injuries during two separate ambushes laid by suspected militants at two different places today.

The first incident occurred in the remote Old Somtal area in Chandel district this morning while the second happened at Yaralpat in Imphal East this evening.
The proscribed UNLF has claimed responsibility for the attack at Old Somtal. A statement of outfit’s publicity chief Ksh Yoiheiba said at least 10 AR personnels including three officers were killed in today’s twin ambush laid by MPA at two different places in Somtal area.

The outfit also claimed recovery of five weapons along with magazines and ammunitions from the possession of the deceased AR troopers.

Official sources said in the first incident at Old Somtal under Tengnoupal police station in Chandel district this morning around
9.15am, five personnels of the 43 Assam Rifles were killed when suspected cadres of the MPA, armed wing of the UNLF laid an ambush on them.
Amongst the deceased were one major and a captain of the 43 Assam Rifles. They are identified as Maj. Bhupendra Mehra and Capt. R Kumar.

According to the source, the incident occurred when a column of 43 Assam Rifles on two vehicles were carrying out a special duty led by Maj. Bhupendra Mehra and Capt. R Kumar.
The convoy was heading towards the New Somtal road when they came under attack by some well equipped militants suspected to be MPA of the UNLF, the source said.

The militants initially fired rocket and lethod bombs upon the AR troops which was followed by a rain of bullets from the sophisticated weapons like AK rifles M-16 rifles and G-3 series rifles, it added.

The AR troops were moving along the road in between two hillocks when they ran into the ambush by the militants.
In the initial intense attack of the militants from atop the two hilltops Maj. Bhupendra Mehra and Capt. R Kumar who were leading the convoy were killed.

Three other personnels of the 43 AR were also killed inside the Gypsy in which they were traveling, the source added. 

The source further revealed that the AR personnels following in a truck behind the Gypsy retaliated the attack and an encounter ensued for more than 15 minutes.

However, the UGs who were stationed atop the hillocks having the advantage of position managed to collect some weapons from the deceased AR personnels, the source added.

It further said exchanges of fire between the two sides continued till arrival of additional reinforcement at the spot around
10.15am.
On the other hand it has been confirmed officially that two AK-47 Rifles along with magazines, two INSAS Rifles with magazines and a stand Carbine have been lost during the attack.

In the meantime, with continuous concentrations of reinforced from the nearby Assam Rifles camps, the entire New Samtal road in Chandel district has is under control of the security forces.
The security forces have initiated a massive operations in New Samtal area specially along the tracks which the armed UGs could have escaped after the ambush.

In the meantime, a team of Tengnoupal police have rushed to the encounter site at New Samtal road and picked up the dead bodies of Assam Rifles personnel including the two officers and brought them to RIMS morgue this evening for the post mortem analysis.

In yet another incident, one Constable of Imphal East district police commando sustained bullet injury during an ambush laid by some unidentified gunmen suspected to be UGs at Yaralpat near Mega Manipur School under, Porompat police station in Imphal East this evening around 4.10 pm.
According to police sources, the incident occurred when a team of  CDO Imphal East were moving on two vehicles in a routine patrol towards Nongpok Sajenbam.

The team came under intense attack from some well equipped armed person suspected to be valley based UGs from the road side at Tinsit hill near
Mega Manipur School this evening by firing lethod shells and other sophisticate weapons.
The commandos also retaliated the attack which resulted in an encounter between the two sides for about 30 minutes till the arrival of additional reinforcement. During the attack one constable of the CDO Imphal East identified as Bimol sustained bullet injuriy. 

During search operations carried out police at the encounter site led to recovery of two empty cases of lethod shells and one unexploded lethod shell.

On the other hand, the injured constable Bimol has been evacuated to JN Hospital this evening and later he has been shifted to Shija hospital for conducting a major operation late this evening, the source added.
