Tamei which is one of the
sub-Division of Tamenglong District, Manipur also share the
border with the state of Nagaland and Assam. Looking into the
background and unique characteristics of Tamei in respect of
its natural beauty, its landscape ,climatic conditions,
weather flora and fauna, one feels that Tamei is a gift of
nature. Tamei is not only charming but also abound in very
rare species of wild life and rich vegetation. It is a land of
wild blue yonder, promising visitors a dazzling maze of
natural beauty. The TAMEI TOWN was established under the initiative and supervision of shri Talukdar the then SDO Tamenglong in constitution with the local leaders, landowners, public leaders and well wishers. With the consent from the two villages namely Tamah and Langmei and donation of this piece of land of 1147 Sq.Kms (Approximately) It was established and Tamei Town came into its existence. The name TAMEI is derived from the prefix and suffix of Tamah and Langmei, thus prefix "TA" from Tamah and suffix "MEI" from Langmei coined Tamei. Tamei is 188 kms from Imphal via Tamenglong District Head Quarter and 115 kms from Imphal via Kangpokpi also know as old IT road. Regular buses ply between Imphal to Tamei. This region is known for its deep gorge, mysterious cave and splendid waterfall, lofty green hills, meandering rivers, misty mountains and its exotic orchids.
OCCUPATION:- The main occupation of the people is agriculture.Geographically the land set up is of hilly tract thus 95% of the people practice and depend on Jhuming and shifting cultivation.thought about 2% of the total agricultural area for wet cultivation is available it is confined mainly along the river bank of Imbiuky (Barak), Ahangky (Irang) and Agaky river Cousres.
AGRICULTURE:- The Main crops cultivated in the sub-division are paddy, maze, ginger, pumpkin, cotton, green peas, chilies,cardamom etc. Besides plantation of tea is found successful in the sub-division.
HORTICULTURE:- The sub-division also favors the growth of banana, oranges, lemons, pine-apple etc etc.
FOREST:- The area is rich forest produces- timber, dal-chinis, black peppers, canes, bamboos, edible mushrooms, variety of vegetables etc.
Transport And Communication:- The sub-division is very poor in transport and communication. Imphal-Tamenglong road via Kangpokpi was the life line/road passing through this sub-division Tamei is 188 kms from Imphal via Tamenglong District Head Quarter and 115 kms from Imphal via Kangpokpi also know as old IT road. Besides, there are two other roads connecting Tamei head quarter with other places i.e Tamei via Kuilong and Tamei via Konphung (14.5km from Tamei zero points). Construction of the said road has been discontinued since first part of the year 2001.
MARKET FACILITIES:- The market facilities in this area is very poor. Tamei Bazar is is the only market within the Tamei Sub-Division. Traders in the said market faces a lot of problem to bring in goods and commodities due to poor transport and communication.
ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES :-Rice and sugar as per the latest hill house counting, the population of Tamei sub-division is 21,012 with 2835 households. Out of the total houses there are 1793 recorded families belongs to BPL group. There are two PDSCs ,one each at tamei HQ and (specially rice) was to be distributed to the publics through 6(six) FPS agents
Now
Tamei is one of the Sub-divisional Head Quarter locating in
the North of district Head Quarter Tamenglong and with 50 kms
distance from the District Head Quarter. There are two
administrative units /circle SDC Tamei and SDC Kuilong,
however SDC Kuilong has not yet been inducted and posted

4.Hamai Christian English Higher Secondary School.(Private).
