Introduction to Zeliangrong Nagas |

In Manipur the Zeliangrong (ZLR) are called as
Kabuis or Kacha Nagas.
Again in Nagaland, Rong is excluded from Zeliangrong and called as
Zeliang. If you still confused about ZLR you come
to the right place! ZLR is a collective name given to Zeme/Zemai, Liangmai,
Rongmai and Puimei people even thought "PUI" is not included in nomenclature.
The descendants of Hoi of Makuilongdi (Makhel) were
tragically divided and were made peripheral appendages to three political
entities - Manipur, Naga Hills (Nagaland) and the North Cachar District of Assam.
The Zeliangrong today occupy
the areas lying between 93 degrees E and 94 degree E longitude and 94.40 degrees
and 24 degrees N latitude in N. C Hills of Assam; Paren subdivision and Jalukie
area of Nagaland; Tamenglong district, Sardar hills of Senapati district,
northern part Henglep subdivision of Churachanpur district, Jiribam subdivision
of Imphal district, Imphal valley and Silchar Town and its adjoining slopes in
Manipur - in area totaling about 12,000 sq. km (Manipur: 7885.65, Nagaland:
1304.97, besides Silchare and Imphal valleys.)
In olden days Zeliangrong also believed in
demons and spirits who have their homes and abode in certain places. Every
trees, river, stream, hill, rock and lakes has its resident spirit. They offer
sacrifices and performed ritual to them. But they offer sacrifices to appease
the gods and the spirits that lived there. Illness, sickness, injury and
calamity were inflicted by one god or the other. If a person’s left leg trip
over something or one of the eye itches it portends misfortune. For that they
must appease the gods, demon or spirit. Employing anything from a piece of
ginger to the mithun as the case may be, they observed genna.
Ethnic characteristics:
Zeliangrong have fine
qualities. They are known for their simplicity and hospitality. They are honest,
courteous and cheerful. Stealing is not common. Their granaries were made
outside the house or even outside the village. They never locked their doors!
Only a staff kept the wind from blowing the door open. Like the other Nagas,
they are disciplined people. No one is violating the norms of the village. Mr
.Mills, the Deputy Commissioner of the Naga Hiils once said, “Nagas never lie…”
They are conservative people. They do not easily embrace changes and new ways.
They strongly hold that their forefathers’ ways are the best. New methods and
system of doing things do not appeal to them immediately.
