The Fight of Faith

The lines of a Sunday School song go: I may never march in the infantry… but I’m in the Lord’s army. If we call Jesus our Lord & Saviour, each & everyone is a soldier in God’s army

BUT we are not fighting against people. We are fighting a deadly serious battle against satan who is constantly trying to confuse us to get us to obey him & rebel against God. [Eph 6:10-12]

2 Sam 22/ Psalm 18 is a victory Psalm from which we can glean many useful tips on how to be victorious in the battle against temptation.

The Lord Lives 2 Sm 22:47a
Sin is Man’s desire to be the god of his own life… to act independent of God as if He doesn’t exist. The foundation of all victory is remembering that God exists. HE IS. Jesus has conquered sin & death. He LIVES! Not only that, He lives IN US, to fight the battle from WITHIN US. [Rom 8:10-11]

Let the GOD of my salvation BE EXALTED 2 Sm 22:47b
Key to victory. Get off the throne of one’s heart. Enthrone GOD as King & give HIM full control.
See Him as greater than the weaknesses that would lead us to succumb to temptation.
Have confidence in HIS ability to save, rather than our own ability to fail.

my FORTRESS… in whom I take REFUGE 2 Sm 22:2-3
Corrie Ten Boom had been a prisoner in a concentration camp under Hitler. She recalls watching ants hide in a crack in the wall. She pressed her finger on the crack, but couldn’t reach them… they were safe in their hiding place. And it dawned on her, ”I too, had a hiding place when things were bad. Jesus was this place, the Rock cleft for me.
Our lives are hidden in Christ. [1 Cor 1:30, Col 3:3]

Satan may press down on us, BUT, because we are hidden in Christ, he cannot crush us. [2 Cr 4:7-9]

He TRAINS my hands 2 Sm 22:35 Jesus, is the Captain of the Lord’s Armies. He is the One who teaches the battle strategy to fight & overcome temptation.

The Holy Spirit teaches us how to use the Word of God as a sword to cut down the lies/hooks that satan uses to lead us astray. [Rf v 29 & 31]

He GIRDS me with strength 2 Sm 22:35
Jesus the Lion of Judah within us is greater than satan who prowls around LIKE (pretending to be) a lion. [1 Jn 4:4] Jesus has ALREADY overcome every temptation known to man, and He is with us to strengthen us to conquer sin. [Heb 2:14-15, 1 Pt 5:8-9] Through Him we can leap over barriers satan erects between us and God, and between us & others. Through Jesus we can cut through the troop of negative thoughts satan lets loose at us. [Rf 2 Sm 22:30]

I WILL call upon the LORD 2 Sm 22:2
None of the above is of any use if we don’t call upon the Lord. When David recognized danger, he called upon God. Alas, David was not quick to recognize the hidden dangers of spiritual enemies. He did not call upon God to help him handle relationships or temptations… and that is a mistake we often make. It is easy to remember to call upon God when we are facing recognizable conflicts… We’re not quite so quick to call upon God when we are being tempted with pride, fleshly cravings, irritation, white lies etc… God promises, “Call, I WILL answer…” [Jer 33:3, Zec 13:9]

He DELIVERED me 2 Sm 22:17-18
We all face the same temptations. But we never face anything alone, because God is faithful. He will not let us be tempted more than we can bear. There is an open door to escape every temptation. [1Co 10:13] Through the Holy Spirit we can see the Open Door & we HAVE the power to go through that door of escape. [2 Tm 1:7, Titus 2:11-14]

Christmas reminds us that God heard the despairing cry of the sinner sinking in sin, and that He sent Jesus to rescue us from the flood of iniquity that was sweeping us to Hell… He rescued us not because we were righteous, but because we are helpless & need Him.

Dear Lord & Saviour, teach me, train me, strengthen me. I KNOW that You ARE mighty to save. I take Your Hand KNOWING that YOU WILL lift me up and establish my steps. Thank You for never letting go. Amen.

"You, Lord are my lamp; the Lord turns my darkness into light" 2 Samuel: 22:29

⚡ In 2 Samuel 22, David celebrates the faithfulness of God. Many of the ideas and some of the same words are found in Psalm 18
In the beginning verse David says, " in the day that the Lord had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies and out of the hand of Saul. It vividly shows that David had never considered Saul as his enemy.

⚡ As David sought to establish his rule as a king in Israel, he faced military challenges, political conspiracy, and betrayal by friends and family members. And David was also guilty due to his relationship with Bathsheba. In fact, he was in a plight. Yet, near the end of 2 Samuel, we find David's song of praise to God for His Mercy, Love and Deliverance. He said, You Lord, are my lamp, the Lord
turns my darkness into light.

⚡ After experiencing God's aid in the battle against the Philistines, (2 Samuel 21: 15-22) David likens his rescue to being drawn out of deep waters (22:17) David's very life and that of his men was in serious danger from his enemies. In many of his difficulties, David turned to the Lord. He said, " with your help I can advance against a troop, with my God I can leap over a wall" (V:30)

⚡ Perhaps we identify with David's struggles because he, like us, was far from perfect. Yet he knew that God was greater than the most gigantic problems in his life. With David we can say " As for God his way is perfect, the Lord's word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him" ( V:31)

Life may be with problems, but God is greater than the problems. Let us thank God for seeing our struggles and standing
ready to save us. God delights in saving His children.

Saul like self or David like humble

Saul is anointed as king
David is also anointed as king
Saul despised the anointing but David preserved the anointing.

Going back to the times of Joshua. He did only one  mistake in his life. He made peace with the Gibeonites and extended a league with them without taking the counsel from God. (Josh 9:14,15) later they came to know that they were deceived, but they couldn't kill them because of the league.

But Saul slew them regardless of the league  of Joshua. As a consequence there was three years famine in the land in the days of David. (2 Sam21:1,2) Saul was self righteous. He didn't give heed to the word of God. He misused the anointing. He was a men pleaser. He destroyed them to please Israel and Judah. He expanded the problem. King is not a problem maker, he's a problem solver.

David prayed unto God. He took counsel from God. He understood the importance of anointing. He's not self righteous. Not men pleaser. Immediately he surrendered seven sons of Saul to the Gibeonites fulfilling the righteousness of God. (2 Sam21:1-9) David resolved the prevailing problem from ages.

If you are self righteous and proud, you will be a problem for yourself and for others. If you are humble, you will get rid off your problems and become solution of others problems.

Saul did not commit any great sin, but he had a spirit of pride. David was not a holy person. But he had a spirit of humility.

Hence forth you are a solution for any problem in your family, church, office, business, community in the mighty name of Jesus

The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit (Ps34:18)

Stay blessed

Now there was a famine in the days of David for 3 years, years after year and David inquired of the lord. The lord answered. It is because of Saul and his bloodthirsty home, because he killed the Gibeonites 2 Sam 21:1_2

Israel experienced 3 years of famine and David recognised it as divine discipline.and sought God for the reason.By divine revelation David learnt that the famine was a result of sin, committed by Saul, because he had slain the Gibeonites.Gibeonites were Cananites whom God himself had commanded Joshua to kill. But Joshua was deceived by the Gibeonites and made a covenant with them that the Israelites woul never kill any of them or their descendants.Saul violated this covenant Jos 9:16-20

This was a serious offence against Gods law. Num 30:1-2
.....he must not break his word but must do everything he said Once David had made amends, the Gibeonites would bless the lord's people again. So God takes it very seriously when we break our word, even to an enemy

Lord,we admit we are weak,we need your guidance for victory over our trials.we need you to help us to get victory despite our weakness and enemy's strength.
