Maths in Deuteronomy
The Bible is a fascinating, amazing Book that covers Science, Geography, History and Mathematics. Basic Maths comprises of Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. All these four are found in the Book of Deuteronomy.
➕ Addition and Subtraction ➖
God firmly told that there should not be further Adding or Subtracting to any of the Laws given through Moses.
Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it (Deu 12:32).
✖ Multiplication ✖ God gave specific rules for kings:
But he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, for the LORD has said to you, 'You shall not return that way again.' Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself. (Deu 17:16, 17).
God firmly told that the Israelite king should not multiply horses, wives, gold and silver. He had a reason for enforcing such a strict rule.
In those days’ horses were used mainly in wars. If the Israelites concentrated on multiplying their horses that denote their military strength, they would rely on it rather than on God.
Moreover, horses were available in plenty in Egypt. They would have to travel to Egypt to purchase horses and God forbid that as it would mislead the Israelites to sin.
God did not want the king to have multiply wives as it would lead to political, foreign alliance. The foreign wives would bring in their culture, custom and god into the land of Israel. This would corrupt the people enticing them to idolatry.
The king was forbidden to multiply gold and silver as it would lift their heart to self-confidence and pride. Moreover, to multiply wealth they might enforce immoderate burden on their own citizens.
King Solomon violated all the three Multiplication Rules whereas King David violated the last two. Ultimately this resulted in the Division of the Kingdom.
God did not want His kings to rely on their military strength, political alliance or on their wealth, position and authority. Instead, He wanted them to rely on Him for their victories, position and provision.
➗ Division ➗ God told Moses:
You shall prepare roads for yourself, and divide into three parts the territory of your land which the LORD your God is giving you to inherit, that any manslayer may flee there (Deu 19:3).
The land had to be divided into three parts with a city of refuge at the centre of each. So that the manslayer may take refuge in it. These days we don't have cities of refuge. But God Himself, is our refuge and strength.
Maths in Deuteronomy teach us:
➕ Never Add to His Word.
➖ Don't Subtract any of His Teachings
✖ Rely on Him ALONE.
➗ God is our Refuge.
God bless us to be channels of blessings.

Everyday Bible Devotion
Maybe many of you have heard this saying - Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers. God deals with that attitude sternly in Dt 22:1-4. In Luke 15, Jesus described the pain of those who lost something they valued, and the extraordinary lengths they go to, to recover what was lost. You see, God understands the pain that someone feels when they lose something they value. HE has experienced the pain of losing HIS treasured possession when satan successfully caused Adam & Eve to give in to temptation.
God says, ’I have loved you with an everlasting love…’ [Jer 31:3] God’s loved us before the foundation of the world was laid. The All-Knowing God knew all about the wilful disobedience of Man, and YET God loved us. And in His love, He created us. In His love, He prepared salvation’s plan. Jesus came so that we who were lost could be restored to the One who loves us and desires that we be restored to Him.
All these laws come from the heart of the Father who was willing to send His Own Son to die bearing the punishment of our sins on Himself. They come from the heart of the Saviour who counted it joy to die in our place to deliver us from slavery to sin.
⚜ As we read through all these laws, it is good to remember that this is God our Father training His people to take their first toddling steps of love. In the wilderness He had taught them to walk by faith. And now, He is teaching them/us to overcome the selfishness that is part of the Adamic nature. He is teaching them/us what justice, fair play, neighbourly concern & righteousness look like.
⚜ HE is our role model for unconditional love. We know what love is, because HE first loved us. And BECAUSE we know what it is to be loved by God, we can then love others. [1 Jn 4:19]
⚜ Jesus said, that LOVE will be the identifying mark of His disciples.
Sadly, today, the world thinks of Christians as hypocritical, ‘holier-than-thou’ people. So, what went wrong?
In Rev 2:1-7 Jesus reveals that the Ephesian church was righteous – not tolerating wicked people; they labored without growing weary… BUT they had lost their FIRST love.
Obedience which springs from mere rule-keeping & a desire to be perfect, results in a cold heart.
God’s love FOR US is the foundation of the Law. LOVE motivated God to give the Law to train His people to walk in paths of righteousness, faith & love.
Knowing the character of God, knowing His love for us is key & essential to whole-hearted obedience. Moses emphasized that God loved them. [Dt 4:37, 7:7-8, 7:13, 10:15, 23:5]
When we know HIS love, we are set free from an unholy fear of punishment/rejection and breaks all false mental images we have of God. [Rf 1 Jn 4:16-18, Jm 1:16-17, 1 Jn 1:5]
When we see God as HE is, we don’t have to try to make Him our priority. Love automatically makes us desire to have Him at the centre.
Then, obedience is no longer merely an outward compliance to the Law. Instead obedience springs from a heart that is submitted to God and desires to honour HIM. We obey because we trust God’s wisdom & love.
In Christ, God has flooded our hearts with HIS Spirit of love, so we have the power to overcome sin & selfishness and love, trust & obey. [Rom 5:5, 2 Tim 1:7]
When Paul wrote to the Ephesian church, the key elements of his prayer for them/us are: [Eph 3:16-19]. That the Holy Spirit would give us revelation understanding of who God is?. [Eph 1:17] That through intimate fellowship with GOD we would be better able to understand what He is calling us to do and also grasp what immense resources we have at our disposal to fulfill that calling. [Eph 1:18-20]
That we would be rooted & grounded in the love of God.
That we would know the full & amazing dimensions of God’s love for us.
Abba Father, search my heart. Break what needs to break. Cleanse what needs to go. Breathe afresh on me. Where my heart has grown cold, re-ignite passion & love for You. In Jesus Name. Amen.

Principles Governing Kings
Be sure that the man you choose to be king is the one whom the LORD has chosen. He must be one of your own people; do not make a foreigner your king.
The king is not to have many wives, because this would make him turn away from the LORD; and he is not to make himself rich with silver and gold.
When he becomes king, he is to have a copy of the book of God's laws and teachings made from the original copy kept by the levitical priests.
He is to keep this book near *him and read from it all his life, so that he will learn to honor the LORD and to obey faithfully everything that is commanded in it.
If a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD and what he says does not come true, then it is not the LORD's message. That prophet has spoken on his own authority, and you are not to fear him.
Do not move your neighbor's property line, established long ago in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
⚖ If any of you try to harm another by false accusations, both of you are to go to the one place of worship and be judged by the priests and judges who are then in office.
⌛ Women are not to wear men's clothing, and men are not to wear women's clothing; the LORD your God hates people who do such things.
When you lend money or food or anything else to Israelites, do not charge them interest.
Obey this rule, and the LORD your God will bless everything you do in the land that you are going to occupy.*
*When you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not put off doing what you promised; the LORD will hold you to your vow, and it is a sin not to keep it.
but if you make one voluntarily, be sure that you keep it.*
"All glory and honour belongs to God alone"
Deuteronomy 17 to 23: What were the condemned, prohibited practices detestable to the Lord?
