And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.

A Lesson on Marriage (Genesis chapter 24)

Abraham though well advanced in age sets a good example on how a God given child should be settled in marriage. Settling a child in marriage is one of the important duties of parents. If Abraham's example is followed the blessings will be great.

  1.  Abraham was a person who obeyed God, kept His commandments and requirements, decrees and laws. All His plans and decisions for his son's marriage were based on the fear he had for God.

  2. Abraham was in the world but not of the world. Though he lived among the Canaanites his life was separated unto God. He did not want a wife for his son from the Canaanites as they did not believe in the true and living God.

  3. He wanted his trustworthy servant to go to his own country and choose a wife from his own relatives. He gave PRIORITY to his God.

  4. The servant he sent on this mission was influenced much by his holy life and he too was God fearing and prayerful.

  5. He reached Nahor and totally depended on God for the choice of the bride for Isaac. He waited at a well at Nahor. He prayed that the girl chosen by God should first give him a drink and voluntarily quench the the thirst of the camels. His prayer was answered as Rebekah came to the well.

  6. God did not abandon His faithfulness and kindness to Abraham and led him to the right place and provided a wife for Isaac.

  7. Rebekah's family also knew it was God's will and agreed to send her as a wife for Isaac.

They that trust in the Lord shall never be put to shame.
Isaac was happily married according to God's will.

Parents should give Priority to God in all their plans and decisions regarding their children's marriage. Their Priority must be to choose only a born again believer and prayerfully seek God's specific guidance.

If they do so, their children will surely have a blessed and happy married life with Christ as the Head of their home.

The Promise-Keeper

Abraham & Abimelech had disputes over sharing water, and they covenanted to respect the wells that Abraham had dug. [Gen 21:25-34]

But as soon as Abraham was dead, the Philistines filled up the wells, and quarreled with Isaac when he went to revive them. They broke the covenant. [Gen 26:12-23]

Isaac moved to Abraham’s well Beersheba the “Well of the 7-fold Oath”.

That well too had been filled up with debris… Symbolic of how easily people break promises and relationships…

Isaac had obeyed God in staying in Gerar. Did he now wonder whether he had actually heard God, or whether it was his imagination? Things are meant to be smooth when you are doing God’s Will right? Gen 26:2-5

God the Father saw Isaac’s lonely struggle, and came the same night to remind Isaac of HIS – God’s faithful love, and His integrity in keeping promises… Do not fear, I AM WITH YOU. Gen 26:24

In the broken world in which we are living in, relationships turn sour at times… people break promises… people abuse trust… people turn out to be something very different from what we thought they were…

In such a world it is so comforting to remember:
⚓ Jesus is the same, yesterday, today & forever. Heb 13:8
⚓ God loves us with a steadfast, unchanging love. [Jer 31:3, Lam 3:22-23]
God cannot lie. [Tt 1:2, Heb 6:18]
⚓ He has guaranteed every promise by swearing by Himself. [Gen 22:16, Heb 6:16-18]
⚓ Every promise God has made to us, is Yes & Amen in Christ Jesus. [2 Cr 1:20]
⚓ God is for us not against us. He’s on our side. [Rom 8:31]
⚓ Nothing can separate us from the love of God. [Rom 8:35-38]
⚓ Therefore we can depend on God’s love. [1 Jn 4:16]

We are all thirsty for love. People fail us. But God invites us to come to HIM and enjoy the unending waterfall of His grace, and know the limitless ocean of His love… [Rev 21:6, Is 55:1, Ps 81:10, Jn 4:14]

We praise You, Abba Father, for Your absolute integrity, Your steadfast love, Your unchanging faithfulness. You know the ways in which each one of us needs Your loving comfort & reassurance… Speak Lord and lift us up from despair to joy and peace. Fill and refresh every heart with YOUR love. In Jesus Name. Amen

Genesis 25:30–32

And Esau said to Jacob, ‘Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary.’ ……………… Jacob said, ‘Sell me your birthright as of this day.’ And Esau said, ‘Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me'”

Jacob and Esau were twin brothers born to Isaac and Rebekah. We read earlier that they struggled together in Rebekah's womb, as an indication of their troubled relationship.

Jacob was a man, dwelling in tents (Genesis 25:27), and his mother's favorite. In contrast with Esau who was a skillful hunter and his father’s favorite

Oneday when Esau came in weary and hungry after being out in the field. Jacob was cooking a red stew and Esau asked for some.

Jacob made a deal with his older brother, to sell his birthright for stew. He sold his inheritance for a single meal.

In the New Testament book of Hebrews 12:16 we are warned not to be “godless like Esau.

What caused Esau’s downfall?

Esau was an emotional, temperamental, even impulsive.

Are we like Esau?
Are we living for instant gratification?
“If it feels good, do it”, attitude …

Everyone of us have ‘small’ or ‘Big’ opportunities to make quick money in an unethical way, or receive a promotion by illegitimate means, or to cheat someone to get something.

We must guard against a “small” indulgence today that will rob us of spiritual blessings tomorrow.

Today we are living in a ‘Google world’.... Google searches, Facebook posts, likes, text messages, ………...and so on….

If we want something, we get it. “There must be an app for that,” right?
*How many of us fall into situations where we see something we like and we won’t stop until we get it, despite the long-term consequences it may have?

We must guard against these “small” satisfactions today that will rob us of spiritual blessings tomorrow.

Make our choices with eternity.

We need a constant, daily relationship with God Almighty to keep us in the center of His will.

Settling Family Issues

Abraham again took a wife, and her name was Keturah. And she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah (Gen 25:1, 2).

And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac. But Abraham gave gifts to the sons of the concubines which Abraham had; and while he was still living he sent them eastward, away from Isaac his son, to the country of the east (Gen 25:5, 6).

Abraham while he was still alive, settled property matters. He gave all to Isaac but gave gifts to the children who were born to him through Keturah. He also sent them far away from Isaac, His promised son.

Property issues separate and often cause strife among children. God fearing parents must settle their wealth in a God-fearing manner among their children. Being partial and leaving one out will also cause rift among children.

Abraham, the Man of Prayer, God’s Friend, the Great Intercessor, the Father of All Them that Believe was also a man who knew to settle his wealth. He did not want to leave strife for his son Isaac.

God had separated Lot and Ishmael from Abraham’s family in earlier days. So, he knew that it was best to distance Keturah’s children far away from his Promised son Isaac.

⚰ The Bible says that after Abraham’s death, his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah (Gen 25:9). No heartaches and disputes. They buried their father and moved to live their own life.

All these facts about Abraham are recorded in the Bible so that we know about him and his life. They are also lesson for us to observe and learn.

Godly parents need to be wise parents to avoid misunderstandings and strife among their children after their life time. May God give parents wisdom to settle property wisely, without partiality and amicably.

God bless us to be channels of blessing.

The Stewardship Prayer Of Eliezer...The Senior Servant and The Steward Of Abraham's Household. Genesis 24:12-16

Abraham Trusted Eliezer Of Damascus So Much So That He Was Going To Leave His Inheritance To Him. Since Abraham Had No Heir Eliezer Was The Heir Apparent, Genesis 15:2-3, As Per The Custom.

Abraham Had To Give His Inheritance To The Senior Most Household Administrator Because He Was Childless And Then Isaac Came Along As Promised By God.

What Stands Out In Eliezer Is His Impeccable Character and Loyalty To Abraham. Surely He Would Have Known That According To The Local Custom Abraham Was Going To Leave Behind His Inheritance Wealth And Riches To Him. They Both Would Have Discussed About It Many Times Over The Years And Yet Eliezer, Was Not Jealous Or Angry With The Arrival Of THE TRUE HEIR, ISSAC, And Remained In Abraham's Household Carrying Out His Duties.

He Was Even Willing To Look For A Bride For Isaac, Knowing That The Inheritance He Was Once Suppose To Get Will Be Passed On To Isaac And His Descendants.

In These Verses, Genesis 24:12-16,

There Are FIVE "S" POINTS In His Prayer Which We Can Use As A Guideline and Not As A Formula.

1. SIMPLE This Prayer Was So Simple, With Child Like Faith And Approach, To The Point, Clear Cut. Focused Only On The Assignment. No Selfish Motives. No Hidden Agenda. If We Heard It, We Would All Have Said, "Amen", Because of The Plain Simplicity of The Prayer.
In Our Prayer, We Don't Have To Have Elizabethan English. Pigeon English And Broken English, Or Any Language, Will Get The Job Done.

Because, Every Imperfect Prayer Is Perfected In Christ Jesus Our High Priest, Before It Goes To Our Father God. God Sees Our Heart And He Knows What We Mean.

2. SHORT A 93 Words, One Minute, Power Packed Prayer. There Has Been A Deception That The Longer We Pray The More Spiritually We Are. When We Go Through The Prayers Of Jesus, The Longest Prayer He Said Was When He Was..Alone. Medium Prayer, When He Was With His Disciples. And The Shortest Prayer Was Said When He Was In The Public, With The Crowd.

But, We Generally, Do The Opposite. Some Tend To Monopolies The Prayer Time In Public Meetings. Some Children Fall Asleep When Some of Their Mamas Pray. There Is A Place For Lengthy Prayers. Whether Long Or Short..It Is The Depth of The Prayer That Matters.

Word Based And Faith Filled Prayer Gets To The Throne Room. Eliezer Would Have Been Praying All The Way In His Journey and He Would Have Been Soaked In Prayer. But When He Came To The Well He Made It Short and Sweet, Or Else He Would Have Missed Rebecca With His Closed Eyes!.

The Shortest Prayer I Prayed Was In The ICU Unit, Many Years Ago. I Declared Psalm 118:17 "You Will Live and Not Die", Over A young man whom Doctors Said, Will Die Within Two Days. But, God Extended His Life For One Year and One Month So That, I Could Prepare Him for The Lord.

It Was Not The Length of My Prayer. IT WAS THE GRACE OF GOD AND HIS CREATIVE WORD AT WORK! HIS WORD Must Go Forth..Amen! Just Radically Obey!

3. SUBJECT It Is Better To Have Some Subjects, Headings, Especially In Small Groups, To Keep Some Kind of Order In Prayer. When Praying Stick To The Topic. Elizer's Subject Was "Choosing The Right Girl". And He Prayed For That Purpose Only.

4. SPECIFIC He Didn't Pray, "Lord Help Me Find The Right Girl". He Prayed For The Kind Of Girl He Wanted. And What She Should Do At The Well. And What She Should Say In Reply To His Request.

By Being Specific, God Gives Me What I Need and Not What I Want. One Example From My Past.

When I was living in a Small One Bedroom Flat There was only Enough Space In The Bedroom For a Very Small Dressing Table. I Wanted A Small Dressing Table With A Tall Mirror. I Was Told By My Senior Friends, That They Don't Make That Kind of a Dressing Table Anymore Because It Was Old Fashioned And Non Existent. But, Six Weeks Later, A Lady Approached Me Saying, That She Had Some Unwanted Furniture In Storage. What I Saw Was Too Good To Be True. Not Only Was The Exact Dressing Table In The Warehouse. It Had Every Specific Items That I Wanted For The Flat Which Was On My List, With Perfect Colour Combination To Match The Interior Design And The Rest Of The Furnitures and Decor And For The Exact Money That I Had! God Takes Care of The Specifics. Nothing Is Too Small For Him!

5. SILENCE After Praying, Eliezer Silently Watched Rebecca. We Should Not Leave Our Place Of Prayer Without Listening for The Answer. Learn To Hear From Him. Don't Rush In And Rush Out Of Prayer. Wait On Him. Learn To Recognise The Answer Because, It Can Come In The Way We Are Not Expecting.

Child of God, Expect God To Reward When We Pray In Faith, Hebrews 11:6.
Eliezer Was From Damascus, A Syrian. God Heard The Prayer Of A Syrian. My Prayer is That The Present Syrian Crisis And Refugee Situation Will Open The Doors To The Blessings Of Abraham In Christ Jesus To Be Upon Them Also, So That The Children of Eliezer Can Blessed. He Helped Abraham To Find The Bride For His Son Isaac Through A Prayer Of Sincerity, Simplicity, Spirit Lead, Specific To The Subject Within A Short Time Frame, Silently Watched His Prayer At Work, In The Space Between Him and The Well.
